The “Recycling Heroes” project was launched on 6 September. It is a joint initiative to highlight the RNF slogan of “Taking Hands today for a cleaner Namibia Tomorrow” with assistance from Development Workshop Namibia and supported by Coca Cola Namibia Beverages.
The aim of the project is to upskill and enable unemployed females, mostly from informal settlements in Namibia to earn an income by collecting and sorting recyclables. This will not only ensure that recyclable waste will be retrieved to enter the collection stream, but will create awareness that recyclables have a value, and contribute to keeping communities and surrounds clean.
Unemployed women will be trained to become active in the collection and sorting of recyclable waste, from which an income can be generated. Assistance will be rendered in linking the participants to reputable recycling waste companies (where possible, those to be members of the RNF) to ensure fair returns on the sale of the recyclables.
The training will be facilitated via DWN’s current network (given the projects they run in various towns) with the assistance of their community leaders.
Three training sessions with 50 participants each are scheduled for Windhoek, Otjiwarongo and Swakopmund in 2023, with further training sessions planned for 2024 in other areas.
